Tajikistan’s Ambassador to Iran: Dushanbe Does Not Support Sanctions Against Iran

Tajikistan’s Ambassador to Iran, Nozimiddin Zohidi, stated that Dushanbe opposes sanctions against Iran, believing that restrictions and sanctions will not benefit any country. On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of Tajikistan’s state independence, he declared that many sanctions do not comply with international legal norms and should not be used to resolve political contradictions.

According to him, Tajikistan maintains the position that sanctions serve neither the interests of countries imposing restrictions nor the states against which they are applied.

The Tajik ambassador’s statement came against the backdrop of escalating conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran in recent years. Since late February 2026, the United States and Israel have launched successive attacks on military facilities, missile storage infrastructure, and Iran’s nuclear sites. Washington and Tel Aviv claim the objective is to prevent the expansion of Iran’s nuclear program, limit missile capabilities, and reduce Iran’s military influence in the region. Iran considers these strikes a violation of its sovereignty, denies them, and in response carries out strikes against U.S. positions and its allies in the region.

Since the beginning of the conflict, Tajikistan has taken a cautious position. Dushanbe has repeatedly expressed support for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict. At the same time, it became one of the first countries to send humanitarian aid to Iran after the strikes began. The humanitarian assistance included medicines, food, and other essential goods.

In recent years, relations between Tajikistan and Iran have noticeably improved. The authorities of both countries have elevated political, economic, and cultural cooperation to the level of strategic partnership. Trade turnover between the countries has also increased significantly.

The latest statement by Tajikistan’s ambassador to Iran underscores that Dushanbe, while continuing close relations with Iran, also maintains a policy of opposing unilateral sanctions and supports the resolution of international disputes through dialogue and diplomatic methods.

It should be noted that relations between Tajikistan and Iran sharply deteriorated in 2015. Dushanbe accused Tehran of supporting the Islamic Renaissance Party. Several films and reports accusing Iran of supporting this opposition party were broadcast on all state channels in the country. Iran rejected these accusations.

After Ibrahim Raisi was appointed president of Iran in 2021, relations between the countries began to gradually improve, and cooperation in the political, economic, and cultural spheres was resumed.
